After the guy from San Diego met up with his friend in Duvrovnik and we coincidentally met the teacher staying at the same place as us, there were four of us heading up to Hvar for a night before parting ways. We got a great deal on private accommadation, paying relatively little for an apartment with a kitchen, bathroom, and balcony, overlooking the town. Hvar is known as one of the islands in Croatia with the best nightlife, with its epicenter in Hvar town, where we stayed. It was really nothing crazy but the four us had such a great time cooking dinner and drinking wine that anywhere would have been fun. Hvar, like practically everywhere else on this coast is picturesque, clean, and charming. It is the kind of place you could spend months in just relaxing and enjoying the fun people at the nice little waterside bars. The main square is right in front of the yacht-filled marina and a nice promenade stretches along the waterfront.

Details:
Getting to the island of Hvar is a simple thing from Dubrovnik, but the service isn't that regular. The ferry leaves at 10:00 on Thursday and Saturday ($19/97kn), but there are also plenty of buses to Split, from which you can take the ferry to Hvar, but this costs around 150kn all together. There are two ports in Hvar, Stari Grad and Hvar town. Hvar town is where the nightlife is, and pretty much everything else besides the historic old town. But often, the ferries don't go to both ports so you could be stuck at the wrong port. If you are planning on getting private accommadation, this is no big deal at all because the owners of the places will come out to meet you and drive you back to there place. If you have a hostel booked, there might be a bus, but I'm not sure. Taxis between the two ports are $38/200kn. We paid $21/110kn per person for a kickass villa with kitchen and bathroom en suite. There are plenty of bars to choose from but the best after-hours place is Venerado, though it doesn't get going until late.
